According to Regulation 21 of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000), any individual using a company-issued firearm for business purposes must complete an annual assessment.

Key requirements:

  • Annual formal assessment (open-book theoretical exam).
  • Annual qualification shooting for business purposes.
  • Applies only to individuals already qualified to handle and use firearms for business.
  • Those without prior firearm qualifications (handgun, shotgun, self-loading rifle, or manual loading rifle) must first complete full training before attending Regulation 21.
  • Reg 21 is not a substitute for the full firearm qualification.

Details About the Course

Regulation 21 (2)(viii) & (ix) states that companies must:

  • Provide practical firearm training at least once every 12 months (or sooner if needed).
  • Conduct annual briefing sessions on firearm laws, duties, and safe handling.
  • Cover the cost of both training and briefing for their security officers.
